Forgotten Casualties of War: Girls in Armed Conflict

e – forse la cosa più scioccante di tutte – dalla comunità internazionale. Il rapporto mostra come le ragazze siano trascurate negli attuali sforzi per liberare i bambini dai gruppi armati e sostenere il loro ritorno a casa. Mette in discussione i sistemi esistenti e sostiene che la comunità internazionale deve finanziare programmi volti a soddisfare le esigenze specifiche delle ragazze, concentrandosi sul rafforzamento delle comunità.

Latest estimates (as of 2005) suggested that of the approximately 300,000 children involved in conflicts worldwide, up to 40% (120,000) were girls, often ignored and hidden by armed groups. Sometimes girls are also reluctant to identify themselves. They face discrimination on a daily basis, from their fellow soldiers, commanders, fellow citizens, governments and - perhaps most shocking of all - by the international community. The report shows how girls are neglected in current efforts to free children from armed groups and support their return home. It questions existing systems and argues that the international community must fund programmes to meet the specific needs of girls, focusing on strengthening communities.
